Rep Kate Donaghue's Crusade Against Substance Abuse

Rep. Kate Donaghue’s Narcan Advocacy

A Life Saving Reminder

State Representative Kate Donaghue keeps a dose of Narcan with her at all times, taped to her State House ID card, to remember her late son, Brian Donaghue Simpson, who died in 2018 due to substance abuse. This commitment to preventing drug overdose deaths led Donaghue to coordinate with other legislators and Boston Medical Center (BMC) to host the first-ever naloxone training at the State House. The State House training was well-attended and inspired Donaghue to host an event in the 19th Worcester District, partnering with local health organizations to offer lifesaving education and supplies.

A Health Crisis, Not a Moral Failure

Donaghue believes that the opioid epidemic is a public health crisis, not a moral failing. Her annual event to raise awareness of the epidemic highlights the need for treatment and support for those struggling with addiction. Donaghue’s bills to support work programs and study administrative discharge from treatment programs were driven by her son’s experiences with unjust firing and discharge. She also supports a bill requiring student IDs to include contact information for a suicide helpline.

A Son and a Fighter

Brian Donaghue Simpson began struggling with depression at a young age and eventually developed a substance abuse disorder. Despite multiple attempts at treatment, and even after moving to different states, Simpson’s addiction persisted. Donaghue’s advocacy is a testament to the life of her son and of the countless others who struggle with addiction. By sharing Brian’s story and advocating for better support and resources, Donaghue hopes that others can avoid the fate of her son.

How You Can Help

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, there are resources available. The Greater Boroughs Health Partnership and other local organizations offer regular naloxone training and supplies for those in need. Check the Westborough Public Health Department website for upcoming events. Donaghue also encourages support of legislation that provides treatment and employment opportunities for those in recovery.
